In three days at the Zurgaadai horse archery camp you will learn the basics of Mongolian archery, get comfortable on a Mongolian horse trained for horse archery, and shoot your first arrows from the saddle. The program is run by Baasansuren, co-founder of Zurgaadai, together with Mongolian archers. You train on our own horse archery horses, so they are used to the work, the bow and the noise of a beginner.
Day 1
Settle into your ger, receive your camp uniform and your deel, and meet your horse. Receive the safety briefing, then sign the indemnity form before any riding or shooting. Introduction to the traditional back quiver and start to learn blind fast nocking before lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy the ride on the horse archery track and learn to ride without holding the rein. Short ground shooting assessment, then a welcome dinner.
Day 2
Skill assessment on the ground and on horseback. Ground sessions: stance, draw, anchor and release. Horse sessions: seat, balance and steering at walk and trot, and shooting at walk and trot.
Day-3
Ground work on fast nocking and blind nocking, plus shooting in motion on the ground, which continues in every ground session from here on. Horse sessions: canter, shooting at a steady rhythm, and first runs through the target lane. Training is filmed for review.
